Bonham Boy Scout Leader Attend Wood Badge Training The date was September 8, 1919, when Sir Robert Baden-Powell, a 61 year old retired general of the British Army and the founder of the World Scounting Movement, conducted the first Scoutmasters’ training camp at Gilwell Park in Epping Forest, outside Londaon, England. At the completion of their training, the participants were presented with a simple wooden bead from a necklace that Baden-Powell had found in a Zula chieftain’s deserted hut in Sough Africa in 1888. From this bead, the course became known around the world as the Wood Badge Course. 1948, the first Wood Badge Course was conducted in the United States.
